A man running frantically down the streets, as fast and as hard as he physically could; his heart threatened to give out from overexertion. Running blindly in the moonless night along unlit and abandoned streets, he fumbled into an alley and leaned against a closed dumpster, breathing heavily, eyes wide trying to see through the inky blackness that enveloped him. He was a large man, a coal miner.
A soft, echoing whisper came from every direction, "Why do you run?"
He turned to continue running, but in his blindness slammed straight into the wall and fell to the ground dazed and out of breath.
In pleading gasps he breathed out, "Why... Why are you after me? ... What do you want?! I'm nobody... please... I don't have any money!"
The echoing whisper softly teased his left ear, "I just want you to love me."
He flinched away from the voice.
"I don't even know who you are!" He lay motionless on the ground, waiting. A long silence followed and he stirred and got up. Whatever had been there seemed to have disappeared just as discreetly as it appeared. He struggled to maintain his balance, but recovered himself and trudged out onto the street where the lights had flickered back on, yet it was still dim. Confused, he simply began to walk back up the street to head home. He felt so insignificant and humiliated from the experience, he was embarrassed. He tried to figure out what just happened, going over it again and again in his head.
Something flew at him and straight through his shins, throwing him face first onto the pavement. It grabbed his right ankle and began dragging him through the street.
The same voice came, infuriated and shrieking, "ALL I HAVE EVER DONE IS LOVE YOU AND GIVE MYSELF ENTIRELY TO YOU AND YOUR ONLY RESPONSE IS TO IGNORE AND ABUSE ME! I JUST WANT YOU TO NOTICE ME!"
The man screamed helplessly reaching decibels that weren't humanly possible. Dragged to the end of the road, he was pulled around and dragged back the other way, up and down the street.
The voice sobbed and pleaded, "Love me, love me, love me," throughout the entire time.
